Broadband: ADSL & Fibre Optic
We Have Broadband!

Yes! Burton exchange was Broadband-enabled in November 2004. This is very good news for all of us who have been waiting patiently (or not so patiently!) for Burton to catch up with technology!

For more information about broadband options and speeds, there are two useful sites which can tell you all you want to know and more! Sam Knows and Cable.

For those wanting Broadband who haven't yet signed up with a supplier you will find a list of them on the Think Broadband and Choose Broadband Deals websites.

Once ordered Broadband it takes, on average, up to 14 days to change your phone line over to Broadband and receive the equipment if your supplier is sending you this.

So how will you know when your line is ready? Well you should have notification of the expected activation date for your line from your Broadband provider. Then you'll need to keep a check on your broadband modem or router - when the light comes on you're ready to go! It should normally be activated by 6pm on the day you've been quoted, so if it's not then that's the time to start asking questions of your suppliers' customer services dept. In some cases it will take longer to activate, depending on line tests that BT have to do to ensure you can receive Broadband.

If you want to know more about how broadband works, or want to read comparative reviews of different suppliers, why not check out more of the info on the Think Broadband or Choose Broadband Deals or Broadband Genie websites? For local broadband technical support check out Burton Tech Support here in Burton.

Race to Infinity - Fibre Optic Broadband

BT wanted to know which communities wanted their exchanges upgraded to fibre optic broadband first. For it to happen at all we needed at least 1000 votes for Burton exchange out of a possible 1526 households.

The Race to Infinity ended on 31 December 2010 and the race winners have been announced but Burton was not amongst them! The total number of votes for Burton didn't exceed 12%.

Beyond Infinity - Fibre to the Home (FTTH)

The next step is to explore better options to improve the internet access of people living in the Burton exchange area. The best we can work for is for everyone to have fibre optic connections from exchange to the home, rather than the current slower copper lines.

The current situation for the Burton exchange can be found here: Link

BT Wholesale speed checker tool: Link

There is also a BT page giving the timescale for the rollout of superfast fibre connections here: Link which quotes Burton as being fibre-enabled by the end of 2014, but there are queries about this as it talks about connections to street cabinets and Burton itself has very few of these, so it's a wait and see situation really. See this page for the why's and wherefore's: Link
